NYLA DAVE TINNEY AVANT: OBITUARY & FUNERAL DETAILS

Nyla Dave Tinney Avant, 74, a longtime resident of Longview, passed away Sunday, July 31, 2011, at a local hospice following a lengthy battle with cancer.

Graveside services for Mrs. Avant are scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 5, 2011, in Lee Cemetery in Winnsboro under direction of Welch Funeral Home, 4619 Judson Road.

Mrs. Avant was born Sept. 11, 1936, in Winnsboro to Taft and Linnie Tinney.

Nyla is survived by her husband of 52 years, Jerry D. Avant Sr. of Longview; daughter and son-in-law, Gwen and Tim Stauffer of Tyler; son, Donnie Avant of Longview; five grandchildren, Amber and Chris Benson of Longview; Nick Stauffer of Bridgeport; Brooke and Mason Avant of Longview; sister and brother-in-law, Bette and Herchel Chadick of Terrell; brother and sister-in-law, Roger and Cindy Tinney of Winnsboro; and sister, Lynda Hollingsworth of Winnsboro; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, and cousins; and her extended school family.

Following in her parents' footsteps as an educator, Nyla received her teaching certificate from East Texas State College in 1958. She completed her masters in 1962. She taught in Seagoville for two years and then moved to Longview where she continued to teach for another 43 years. After her retirement, Nyla enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She and her husband, Jerry, traveled to many wonderful destinations often taking or meeting up with loved ones along the way. Nyla loved being outside, whether taking care of cows in earlier years or planting flowers in her gardens.

Pallbearers will be Billy Russell, Keith Hutchinson, Ray Hollingsworth, Lance Tinney, Chance Tinney and David Blair. Honorary pallbearers will be Amber Benson, Chris Benson, Brooke Avant and Mason Avant.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2011, at Welch Funeral Home.

The family requests memorials be made to Beacon Hospice, P.O. Box 5908, Longview, 75608; or to Texas Oncology, 1300 N. Fourth St., Longview, 75601.
